agree with ya on that...i'll admit, i didn't like raiden when MGS2 came out, but it still had the gameplay that i enjoyed...
Well said Deya.
And I just had a thought. This new/young Dante might look Emo (I HATE how overused that word is, that and all the "Twilight" shit) but all that's been shown is a 2 min trailer. What if he's still the wise cracking, cocky SOB that we know and love? Seriously, all the rage needs to settle until there's more info.
And Ty: I'm still waiting for the source of those quotes.
While you're sort of right about that, Deya, DR and LP were still new franchises where it wasn't known how stuff was going to happen. There weren't any fans from before or expectations to go on.
And yes, while gameplay is ultimately more important, in an established series having recognition is also important after a while, as well. It's not even that old of a series to really need a reboot, and I would have liked to see how things progressed with the Dante/Nero relationship and Dante's new semi-Harem demon-hunting business as it continues to grow.
EDIT: Should we just call this new "Dante" Enzo instead? I'm sure Ty gets the reference, at least.
True, true, but look at Dead Rising, for example. The first one was freakin' awesome. I played the ever loving SHIT out of that game. Even though it didn't sell as many copies as Halo or MGS, Dead Rising had 9and still does have) a huge following, So, you could imagine my surprise when A) I learned that Capcom got a Blue Castle to make Dead Rising 2 and B) They completely reworked the engine a lot of the game play mechanics of the first game in favor of some more questionable ones.
However, I'm still going to give Dead Rising 2 a chance, and at least wait until I play it for a solid amount before I make a decision completely. I still think that Dead Rising is a better game then its sequel (based on the recent demo), but my mind can always change, and it doesn't mean Dead Rising 2 is going to be a bad game.
Just wait until there's some gameplay footage before you completely rag on the game, lol.
Big ol' shoutout to Nisha for the amazing signature!
Like I said, not "completely" ragging on the game, just some relatively, well.... insane choices that were made.
Also, upon further inspection of the thread title, "Devil Mary Cry," I'm to believe that there's some super-secret information not known yet that will make Lady a playable and main character?
Or perhaps...the main character is actually a lady already?
Tranny May Cry? Devil Metrosexual Crying?
Dante will Cry?
Also, perhaps we should expect Vergil to eventually show up as a werewolf.
Maybe Nero will also show up as a human romantically involved with Dante but with an interest for vergil as well? lol.
In my opinion, the mass amount of complaints about the new DMC character design are warranted. In the history of gaming, I don't think any well known, longstanding, and respected gaming franchise has seen a reboot so far where a protagonist is re-designed beyond recognition. (Imagine how that would fare, especially for a longstanding series like Mario, Halo, etc.) However, even I recognize there is more to worry about in this situation than mere characterization or aesthetics. Let's be honest, DMC didn't exactly have a compelling storyline.
So, let us look at the Developer. Ninja Theory's track record from a design point and technical level is also questionable. NT's Kung Fu Chaos for Xbox was terrible, and NT's latest game Enslaved looks mediocre (not released yet though). That leaves us to look at Heavenly Sword, a game where most of the technology was developed by Sony Cambridge. Lucky for Ninja Theory, Heavenly Sword was their absolute best game, the pinnacle of their career. With Developers closing studios all the time, they lucked out and made a sweet deal with Sony early this generation, and Sony has shown to be a great producer and partner for start up developers that want to make a good game (Media Molecule, Incognito, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Sucker Punch, etc). Looking at Heavenly Sword as an action game, it was a sharp contrast to everything DMC stood for. Firstly, it barely ran at 30fps (a DMC no-no), and more importantly, it was heavily influenced by GOW than DMC.
If you're a fan of well scripted cinematic presentation, you should look forward to this new DMC assuming Ninja Theory's collaboration with Capcom pans out well. Everyone else should be hopeful that Capcom's Producer Itsuno is having a bigger influence on design choices over NT choices.
For the record, I liked this developer's previous game, but I didn't love it. That game was the only good game on their track record according to me and critics. Heavenly Sword (as I mentioned above but it was co-developed with Sony Cambridge), and even then HS couldn't touch the best of DMC ever. It was a fun little title though. I'm sure this will be a fun title after all it's Capcom we are dealing with, but will it be up to top DMC standards? What I mean is will this new DmC be as great and fantastic and uber as was DMC1 and DMC3?....or will this new DmC's gameplay be more like the sub par DMC2, or the merely average, competent DMC4? We know so little right now, so that remains to be seen.
All we have is Developer Track record, a new DMC trailer to study, a rebooted but beloved character, and the knowledge that this is yet another western developer taking a loved series off the hands of the Japanese studios (Silent Hill for example).
Also, here's a comic!

Devil May Cry (If he doesn't get to wear Prada).
lol at above.
Here is some more news :
DMC Preview for PS3, XBOX 360 from 1UP.com
Ninja Theory on Devil May Cry: "What Was Cool 12 Years Ago Isn't Cool Anymore"
"When Capcom released the first DmC trailer (reproduced below) last week, the Internet wasn't happy. Here was a series fans loved, in a genre dominated by Japanese developers, with a main character that looked like a Japanese pop star; and the people in charge were bringing in a Western development team, and "reimagining" main character Dante by making him look like -- depending who you ask -- a trendy vampire, Hillary Swank, or Justin Bieber. For many (though notably, not all), the gut reaction was anger.
"I literally can't stop laughing at how bad that character design is..." "I think they are trying to bring new fans into the series and don't care if they alienate the old fans," added Emilio Morales. Ninja Theory creative director Tameem Antoniades, who some have pointed out looks like the new Dante (which he claims wasn't intentional), sees this as an important shift."....
Read a lot more at the link.
Also, for those that care, Devil May Cry is only 8 years old, the first game came out right before the Gamecube and Xbox 1 came out...this reboot is too early imo. Capcom did reboot him sort of in certain respects with DMC3, but it worked out since Dante was still Dante, just young Dante.
The key was Dante was still Dante, but just a new young, hip cool Dante. I guess that wasn't enough. So guess what Capcom did for DMC4? The brought in a new main character, with an interesting angle...but again, it wasn't enough it seems.
I'm sure the new game's gameplay will be fine, but at the cost of butchering the character we've come to love for years. Mario, Masterchief, and Snake are probably very relieved not to suffer such a fate.
Here's a comic about the situation, lol.
