Pile up and sit a spell. I spose its time I did a thread on this stuff as well. Mini reviews more than anything. Also, I cant vouch for spoilers. Sometimes a movie can be spoiled and it still work. Read at your own risk.
The Midnight Meat Train - On the recommendation of a 4chan gif, I saw this flick. It was interesting. It follows a character trying to make it as a photographer. He gets his reality check when some big-name gallery person informs him his images are dead and doesn't give them a second glance. So he sets out for a grittier, more-real outlook on things. The guy that plays Juggernaut from the Xmen movie is the main guy you see and the point of me seeing this film. Quite possibly his best role in his acting career, which doesn't say much since he doesn't really say much of anything the entire duration of the movie. Either way there are a handful of twists and its worth watching, so long as you like your standard blood & guts. Not a date movie.
Juno - I personally was very disappointed with the flick. I honestly hate that I feel this way too, because the witty remarks and general humor is right up my alley. Very dry, very witty, and mostly dark humor all around. The trouble with this is everyone seems to share the same sort of humor, so lines come off as being WAY too scripted. Duh, yes....its a movie, but dammit it shouldn't be this obvious unless its by Mel Brooks or one of those god-awful spoof movies of the past decade. I think its a movie I just didn't "get" but can understand the appeal of. Watch it with your pregnant girlfriend and it will likely become more enjoyable I suppose?
Marley & Me - This is the entire reason I did this thread. I didn't nor do I intend to read the book, so don't even bother telling me it was better. Don't care. This movie did something no other movie made me do. This brought real emotion out of me. Scary movies don't make me scream. Comedies make me laugh I spose, but that is somewhat the point. Action and Suspense movies don't really make me anticipate anything or sit on the edge of my seat. Movies to me have always been about entertaining me. This one changed my outlook on just what I can walk away with from a movie. And im almost guilty to say it because it has Owen Wilson in it, perma-broken nose and all. The movie follows the couple of Anniston and Wilson. Freshly married, moved in together, and happy we just all follow their lives. Eventually they get to a point where they'd like to get a family pet, and as such they discovered the other lead played by Marley the Lab. Marley is on "clearance", and it drives a good portion of the movie as to how. Worst dog ever. Turner and Hootch? Beethoven? Cujo?....nothing on this dog. Ok, so Marley isn't a killer. Who cares?
The dog can EAT anything else it wants, including an answering machine and a phone. A person would just require a bit too long and a jump in movie rating to R before that were to happen. They soon after have their first baby, second baby, third baby.....life gets hectic. Stress is overwhelming. It becomes apparent that there has to be some sort of conflict and at about middle way through the movie for me I get something. Wilson is miserable. The wife is miserable. The kids are just sort of there. The job sucks. But Marley is happy to see everyone. Marley loves, regardless of situation. And having watched this dog "grow up" you now have an emotional investment yourself. Dog owners likely will immediately catch glimpses of their own animal in Marley. The story progresses and as you might expect, tragedy strikes.
The initial trouble made me feel worried. But, this is a movie. Why should I feel worried? I don't know, but I worry on. Then its setting in. Marley is getting old. Not old enough, but you sort of see where the rest of the movie goes from that point. It's heartbreaking nearing the end. By the time you get to the scene that got me, you can likely pick out some of the exact moments the eyes water and stream down my own face. I ain't too proud to cry, but i've always felt like a movie just couldn't possibly do that to me. I was wrong, and after it all i'm actually happy to say that.
The entire thing ended up being about how easy it is for your pets to love you unconditionally. Your pet doesn't care what you do or did, so long as you love it....it too will love you. Your pet doesn't judge you and is always happy to see you. If they aren't happy to see you, they aren't your pet...they are someone elses. The movie offers closure to those who were either too young to say goodbye to a pet, or missed the opportunity to do so. Be ready to laugh, but be ready to cry as well. I recommend this ONLY if you are a pet person of any kind.
